Parent and Adult Roles in a Scouts BSA Troop

Scouting is where adults make profound differences in young people’s lives. Parents and adult leaders within our youth organization must understand that their role is to create a safe environment where young people can grow, explore, learn to fail, get up, and try again! Whether volunteering as Scoutmasters or merit badge counselors, adults should be willing to listen to Scouts, encourage them, and display a sincere interest in their well-being.

PARENT'S CODE OF CONDUCT

  •  I will be a positive role model for my scout and encourage scout spirit by  showing respect and courtesy, and by demonstrating positive support for all scouts, scouters, and parents/volunteers  at every troop meeting and troop event.
  • Be supportive of your scout. Cheer them on at all times, especially when they struggle.
  • Do not yell at or speak negatively to your scout or their fellow scouts in public. Comments should be directed to the Scoutmaster or Committee Chair.
  • Do drop off and pick up your scout on time for meetings and events.
  • Do help the troop by volunteering for troop duties. Make sure you are doing your fair share.
  • If you are not satisfied with an aspect of your scout’s experience, talk to the Scoutmaster or Committee Chair about it at a time they can listen. Generally, this is not immediately before or after a troop meeting or event.
  • Understand that scouting only happens through the efforts of our volunteers. Be appreciative of their efforts.
